I think we as Christian’s today have got so wrapped up in the legalities and doctrines of the “Church”, that we have forgotten the most important parts of being “Christian”. Jesus is Compassion. Jesus is Mercy. Jesus is Forgiveness. Jesus is Just. Jesus is Grace. Jesus is Love. Jesus never turned away a human in need even if that person did not know they had a need. He embraced them with open arms. Why are we to be different? Is not our goal to be more like Jesus?

We were given the Great Commission and the Bible as our guide we should no longer fight or debate what we should or should not do.

Fulfilling the Law Through Love

[8] Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. [9] For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” [10] Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. (Romans 13:8-10 ESV)

I don’t know about anyone else but helping someone (a neighbor as it is put in the verses above) shows Love. You know that little line in the Bible Faith, Hope, Love and the greatest of these is Love thing so many people forget…

Now you might ask “who is my neighbor?”, well again we have an answer from the Bible:

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

[29] But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” [30] Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. [31] Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. [32] So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. [33] But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. [34] He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. [35] And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ [36] Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” [37] He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.” (Luke 10:25-37 ESV)

I may not like or agree with other faiths, beliefs, or opinions, but at the core of what I believe Compassion, Empathy, and Human Dignity are the building blocks of Love. So when I hear people say or demonstrate an un-Christian attitude towards those not of their faith, socially beneath what they think is acceptable, and just plain stupid fear I wonder if they have forgot the Man who healed the sick, feed the hungry, comforted the brokenhearted and perfectly exemplified the love that God has for us all? Have they forgotten that it is not our righteousness but God’s grace through Jesus that saves us all?

So if you want to turn away a refugee, a veteran, or someone not like you please don’t call yourself a “Christian”. Now I am not saying don’t take precautions, because I still believe God gave us brains, but really folks why is it so hard we have an instruction manual and still we keep getting things wrong…
